The NPL Manufacturer Measurement Network held its second quarterly members event on 16 April entitled ‘Succession Planning & the Skills Mix for Manufacturers’ at the 3M BIC. The event was organised in partnership with the University of Huddersfield and the West Yorkshire Consortium of Colleges ‘The Skills Service.’
Before the event, attendees were provided with a unique opportunity to attend a free ‘Shop Floor Metrology’ training session on Calipers and Micrometres run by NPL’s Product Verification Team.
Those in attendance included businesses from a variety of backgrounds, from large organisations and small and medium-sized enterprises to affiliates and local academia, as well as individuals who represented completely new businesses.
The speakers from Reliance Precision Limited, BAE Systems Submarine Solutions, the University of Huddersfield, West Yorkshire Consortium of Colleges and NPL passed valuable information about how they have addressed the skills challenge and what opportunities are available.
For this event’s competition, attendees were asked to estimate how long 10 seconds is by starting a timer and stopping it after they thought 10 seconds had elapsed. The timer was embedded on a touch screen web app with a single button for start/ stop. The results of each entry were stored on the database backend. Two guests who stopped the timer closest to 10 seconds received vouchers for a Product Verification Health Check and a Shop Floor Metrology training session, as well as an NPL mug.
The event received excellent feedback from attendees:
“Another great event.”
“A superb event.”
