The NPL Manufacturer Measurement Network (MMN) held its second quarterly members’ event of 2018 at the 3M BIC on 17 April.

The Manufacturer Measurement Network Event ‘Business Diversification’ was another success and attracted over 60 people related to local businesses and academia.

The event began with laboratory tours at the University of Huddersfield’s Centre for Innovation in Rail (CIR) focusing on new technologies, processes and product development.

A variety of talks, including those from Paul Allen from Centre of Innovation in Rail about ‘Advanced Products and Services in the Railway Supply Chain’; Ken Brockbank from Leeds City Region on ‘Rail Sector Supply Chain Opportunities- LEP View’ and ‘Opportunities in the Defence Sector’ from Andy Tuscher (NDI) respectively, helped attendees to develop a better understanding of the complex topic from different perspectives.

As usual the audience were entertained by the measurement competition which consisted of measuring the time when estimating how many beats per minute on the metronome. The prize was a Tesa Digital Caliper and BBC ‘The Measure of all Things’ DVD. The winner of the competition was Richard Cooper from Knowledge Transfer Network.

The event gathered very positive feedback from attendees.

Really enjoyed my visit to Huddersfield tonight for the Business Diversification Event at 3M Buckley Innovation Centre. So much support for businesses and innovation is high on the agenda”, said Dawn Huntrod, Business Development Manager at NEPIC.

Another amazing feedback came from Bilaal Hussain Razak, Company Executive at Deluxe Beds: “Had a wonderful evening at the NPL MMN Business Diversification Networking Event at the University of Huddersfield exploring in a practical way how you can start to look at business diversification as part of a strategy for growth or commercial sustainability”.

“Kirklees College staff enjoyed the opportunity to take part in this NPL Manufacturer Measurement Network event ‘Business Diversification’ held on 17th April. We were able to talk to many different companies and discuss opportunities such as Apprenticeships and work placements. We made several key contacts who we will work with to support the students at Kirklees College. We look forward to taking part in many more events especially the direct student participation days scheduled for next academic year to help introduce our young talent to this area of expertise”, said Sarah Farrar, Work Placement Employer Liaison Officer at Kirklees College.

During the evening the MMN Member of the Year Awards were announced. Members can vote for themselves or other members in three categories: Innovation, Developing People and Best Application of Measurements. The winner for each category will be announced during July’s ‘Launch Into Space and Nuclear’ event.

The key to the success of MMN events is giving the opportunity to network with likeminded people. Delegates often find new potential customers or suppliers and answers to problems they face in their businesses.
