Local MP Thelma Walker hosted a successful event at the 3M BIC on Friday 9th February to rally support to launch Colne Valley as a powerhouse.

The Colne Valley Business Conference brought together small and medium sized businesses, as well as key stakeholders and influencers, to explore the past of the area and how it can inspire future generations. John McDonnell MP, Shadow Chancellor of the Exchequer was the keynote speaker.

Sixty businesses from the electoral wards of Colne Valley, Crosland Moor and Netherton, Golcar, Holme Valley North, Holme Valley South and Lindley, were in attendance with 10 companies exhibiting. Discussions covered the concerns, pressures and issues impacting businesses in the Colne Valley, as well as supporting good businesses to grow and thrive; to connect; and to prepare for future changes, challenges and opportunities.

In his speech, McDonnell addressed his support for the local area and his backing to boost the economy and small businesses in the North.

Our CEO Prof Liz Towns-Andrews compered the event. Other speakers included Chair of the Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy Committee and Labour MP for Leeds West, Rachel Reeves and Michael Hartig, Head of High Growth and Entrepreneurs at Barclays Bank.

The event was sponsored by Barclays.
