Santander funding to enable SMEs in Huddersfield and the region to employ talented students and graduates

As a Santander Partner University, the University of Huddersfield receives funding from Santander to enable SMEs in Huddersfield and the region to employ talented students and graduates.

Feedback has shown that SMEs struggle to access/attract the newest talent, don’t know how to start the process or don’t see the benefits of employing students and graduates. Although it is often the case that graduates are less aware of SME names and brands, the University of Huddersfield is keen to build relationships with SMEs to ensure local businesses are tapping into the talent pipeline and are in a position to employ students and graduates similarly to larger companies.

Santander are keen to provide this funding for business support and growth whilst the University of Huddersfield want to see students and graduates gaining excellent paid work opportunities.

Why get involved?

  • It’s a great way of getting involved in a ‘graduate scheme’ that many large companies run, with the support and funding from the University and Santander.
  • You may have a project which requires a certain skill-set, or need extra employees to assist in your business, an internship can be a great way to tackle this.
  • Interns can be additional support throughout a busy period.
  • Perhaps you want to grow your team but you’re a small business and need to ensure you recruit the right person for a permanent role – many businesses use internships as a ‘trial period’ with the aim of recruiting permanent staff.
  • At the University of Huddersfield, we have 22,000 students across 400 degree courses which cover a range of industries, such as computing, engineering, design, business and the humanities so we are sure you will find the right candidate for the job.
  • We have students from over 120 countries which means many of our students and graduates have a global outlook and are keen to gain experience internationally.
  • We support businesses through the process. From helping to identify desired skills and assisting with job descriptions, to promoting the role/business and collating applications. We do everything we can to ensure the appointment of an intern is as straightforward as possible.

Feedback from previous businesses

I have utilised the student and graduate internship schemes at The University of Huddersfield which have both been really useful. I have maintained a great relationship with the student intern and, the graduate intern has stayed on with us to progress into a successful permanent position. Balancing growing a young business with sourcing the right talent to help deliver the work is difficult but I have not only found some fantastic people which match the values of my business to help it thrive, I received a financial contribution towards doing so which has been a great help. I would highly recommend the Santander internship to other growing businesses.”

Ellie MacDonald, MacComms.

“Our intern became a valued member of the team who you can give a task to and he will complete it with minimal supervision and to a high standard. Additionally, his creativity has flourished as well as his desire to try new out new ideas and technology in an attempt to innovate.”

Ashley Graham, ADC Property Solutions.
