Meet the 3M BIC Business – Institute of Educational and Social Equity

Next up in our Meet the 3M BIC Business series is the Institute of Educational and Social Equity, run by husband-and-wife team, Paul and Andrea Miller.

Established in 2020, the Institute of Educational and Social Equity specialises in Equality, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) and is the only independent Tertiary level institution of its kind in the UK. It provides research, training and consultancy services to organisations and institutions interested in developing and implementing research-led or research-informed interventions. Founder and managing director Paul Miller tells us more.

Tell us about Institute for Educational and Social Equity and the team based here at the 3M BIC.

We provide research, training and consultancy services on anti-racism, inclusion, diversity, and equity issues. Our organisation is built on three pillars – research, capacity development and institutional support.

We support businesses, institutions and individuals seeking to adopt an evidence approach to their Equality, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) work through workshops and training packages, planning and design of intervention and tools for EDI policies, as well as implementing and delivering interventions for EDI policies and curricular audits.

Andrea and I are directors of the organisation. I have strategic responsibility for the Institute. I am a former senior level University manager and have worked in six UK universities. I am currently the Principal’s EDI & Anti-Racism Adviser at Queens Margaret University in Scotland. I have also written over 110 papers and books concerning social and racial justice issues.

Andrea has operational responsibility for the Institute. She has a background in Customer Service and Accounting Management and spent the last 14 years working in a UK based financial institution where she was a team leader responsible for a small team handling intercontinental financial transactions.

What projects are you currently working on?

Currently we are working with several organisations, including AFT (Associate of Family Therapist) conducting a Cultural Review within the organisation. We are also providing training for the Church of England and their Inclusive Curriculum Leadership Framework.  Similarly, we are working with the Hackney Council in London, specifically the Hackney Inclusions Charter, looking at their Anti-Racist Action plan.

What made you move to the 3M BIC?

We were initially attracted to the 3M BIC because it houses many other businesses, providing us an opportunity to increase awareness of the work we do at the Institute, whilst being conveniently situated in the centre of Huddersfield and across from the University of Huddersfield.

Why do you like being based at the 3M BIC?

When we first came by to enquire about it, we received a warm welcome from Sally who showed us around and offered us a ‘test’ out day, which was quite useful. We were very impressed with the centre. The offices are quite spacious and a good fit for what we’re looking for. Not to mention the location, and fully serviced offices.

What should we be looking out for in your industry?

Since the murder of George Floyd there has been significant global interest in EDI work, particularly in anti-racism. Although this has quietened down somewhat, it is still expected that many organisations will want to invest time and energy in becoming an anti-racist organization over the next two to three years.

What are the future plans for Institute for Educational and Social Equity?

We aim to increase our brand awareness and amplify the impact of our services nationally. Locally, we aim to increase our reach and impact within Kirklees and West Yorkshire, while helping institutions and leaders to create more racially and socially inclusive institutions.
