Engineering Control & Machine Performance Group
The group delivers research in all aspects of engineering design, control and performance optimisation for machine tools and associated systems. It is unique in being able to demonstrate a strong academic and industrial track record in all aspects of machine tool technology from concept and detailed design through verification of machine installation to sustainable production, benchmark calibration and periodic trending tests.
The group is a world leader in the measurement, modelling and compensation of machine tool errors and has over two decades of experience in the development and deployment of machine tool error measurement and compensation systems. Supporting this innovative research, the group is also very strongly aligned with optimal use of machine tool metrology equipment from laser interferometers and inclinometers to on-machine probing and CMM component inspection. Members of the group influence policy in these areas through membership of the Machine Tool Association (MTA) technical committee and active involvement in BSI and ISO standards committees.
A common thread in this group’s research is that the outcomes should always be used to promote excellence in their industrial application and contribute to high value-added manufacturing. As a result, the group’s industrial links are exceptionally strong and include machine tool manufacturers and systems integrators, controller manufacturers, measurement instrument manufacturers, and a broad range of precision engineering end-users of machine tool technologies.
