Tenant Innovate Orthopaedics has been shortlisted for the Start Up and Partnership with Academia Award categories in the Medilink Yorkshire & Humber Healthcare Business Awards 2017.

Innovate Orthopaedics, set up by Alex Gutteridge and Hannah Longbottom in 2015, is an independent medical device company that partners directly with world-leading surgeons to design and manufacture products in the UK that address current issues in orthopaedic sports surgery.

The company, which moved into 3M BIC in 2015, launched its first product in September 2016, a patented, CE-marked screw for ligament surgery, specifically designed for problems involved in reconstructing the Anterior Cruciate Ligament. To get to market they partnered with world-class institutions, such as Imperial College and the Medical AMRC Sheffield.

Since launching the product last year they have already supplied to eight different hospitals, a mixture of NHS and private, with 10 separate surgeons in the North West, South East and South West.

Alex is also currently in discussions with the 3M BIC’s in-house design team to potentially develop some metal prototype devices, as well as linking up with the University of Huddersfield regarding internships and knowledge transfer partnership opportunities.

The regional final will take place on 2 March 2017 at the Mercure St Paul’s Hotel and Spa in Sheffield. Winners of the regional finals will then automatically go through to the grand final Medilink Awards UK, where the best of the sector will be celebrated.

Managing director of Innovate Orthopaedics, Alex Gutteridge, said: “We set up Innovate to challenge the orthopaedic sports medicine market, working closely with the actual end user, the surgeon. We’ve come a long way over the last year, manufacturing our first product, which has already proved to be a huge success in surgery, so being shortlisted for these two awards is testament to the hard work that we’ve put in.”

Innovate Orthopaedics will go up against the following companies in the Start Up category: Barnsley Healthcare Federation, Attigo CIC, Safehand Consulting Limited, Prime Fifty Ltd. Other businesses in the Partnership with Academia Award, include The Sheffield College and HMA.
