Taking Control Of An Organization’s Cyber Security

March 3, 2016 @ 8:30 am - 10:00 am

Date: 03rd March 2016
Time: 8.30am -10.00am
Place: The 3M Room
Anyone following the numerous cyber-security stories in the media could be forgiven for thinking that information security is either, as simple as installing anti-virus software and maintaining good password hygiene, or alternatively it is a highly specialised field best left to the IT professionals.
The reality for most companies lies somewhere between these two extremes, where security is primarily a risk management issue of which IT solutions are only a small part.  The presentation addresses this issue by examining the role and responsibilities of management in countering cyber-security threats to their organisations, and is aimed at small and medium sized businesses (SMEs) be they commercial, technology based, or offering professional services. The law relating to cyber security is also considered as it applies to SMEs.
The talk is deliberately non-technical, and concentrates on the application of the information security standard BS ISO 27001, covering:

  • A brief introduction to ISO 27001;
  • An overview of the legal framework as it relates to information security ; and
  • Implementing a Cyber-Security Management System (CSMS).

It is hoped that this talk highlights that introducing a CSMS to an organisation, although important, need not be onerous, and that technical fixes are only of value if they form part of a wider management process.
