Name: Maisie Mountcastle

Job title: Marketing Officer

Tell us about your career journey to the 3M BIC:

I have had a ‘job’ ever since I was 14 which started at a family catering business and then as a project co-ordinator at an Interior Design company in Doncaster for a number of years. However, my ‘career’ started at the 3M BIC in 2016 with a placement year as part of my Events Management Degree at the University of Huddersfield. After the placement year I was asked to continue the Events Assistant role part-time alongside my final year of studies and then once I graduated, I was offered the permanent role. Fast forward a couple of years I was promoted to Events Marketing Officer and then most recently promoted to Marketing Officer.

Describe a typical day at work:

If you’d have asked me a year ago what my typical day at work would be it would be a lot different to how it is now! To say I haven’t stepped foot in the office in nearly a year is definitely a strange feeling. Over the last few months, the majority of my time has been spent working with a design agency to build a new brand and website ready for the launch of the Sir George Buckley Innovation Centre, as well as helping to launch the first Kirklees Top 100 Companies. Moving forward my days will be filled with planning and implementing different elements of the 3M BIC marketing strategy.

What keeps you motivated at work?

The challenge of being out of my comfort zone and learning new skills! Whether that’s self-taught or through traditional learning.

The most exciting thing about your job?

I love all things design, so when I get the opportunity to work on branding and design projects, I really enjoy testing myself. I also find huge satisfaction in seeing a project go from idea to reality.

The most challenging?

I would definitely say the most challenging part is having to learn new programme software. But as previously said, I love the challenge and I know it only helps improve my skill set and work!

Time of the day you are most creative or inspired?

I assume the majority of people would say the morning but I’m the opposite! It’s usually around 2pm when I have my pick-me-up coffee.

Proudest career moment?

I would definitely say achieving a first-class degree whilst also working part-time at the 3M BIC!

Best piece of advice you’ve been given?

You spend a third of your life at work, you shouldn’t spend a third of your time doing anything you don’t enjoy!

What innovations should we look out for in your industry?

There is a myriad of innovations I will have to look out for across the broad spectrum of offerings we provide at the 3M BIC. For example, the use of virtual event platforms which have taken off in the events industry over the past year and the ever-expanding developments in the technology world.

Out of the office…?

At the moment… not very much! But normally you’d find me out and about with my friends and family! I’ve recently invested in a Cricut machine so most of my spare time is now spent watching YouTube tutorials and experimenting making different types of crafts with it.
