Jordan Furness – Events Officer

Tell us about your career journey to the 3M BIC

I started at the 3M BIC during the placement year of my Events Management Degree at the University of Huddersfield. Once that had finished, I was offered a part-time role during my final year of study and once I graduated, I was offered a permanent full-time position.

Describe a typical day at work

The early morning usually involves setting up our event spaces for the day. I will then greet the clients and make sure everything is okay before their attendees arrive. Once their event is underway this then allows me to check on any new queries that have come in, whilst also being on hand should the current event require any assistance. Once the bookings have finished for the day, I usually spend my time cleaning and rearranging the spaces to setup for the next day.

What keeps you motivated at work?

Meeting different clients, all of whom have different ideas and requirements. It keeps me on my toes and ensures that I’m always testing the full extent of my skillset.

The most exciting thing about your job?

Regularly working with different people from a variety of businesses in several different sectors, it means that no two events are ever the same.

The most challenging?

Not having enough hours in the day to be able to complete everything that I need to!

Time of the day you most creative or inspired?

Mid-morning once the events for the day are underway and I can sit down at my desk with a cup of tea in hand.

Proudest career moment?

Recently completing my Masters by Research, which I undertook part-time. It allowed me to use my skills I have developed in my role over the past seven years whilst providing me with a case study upon which to base my research.

Best piece of advice you’ve been given?

“A man with new ideas is a madman, until his ideas triumph.”

What innovations should we look out for in your industry?

At the moment, although the event industry is struggling hugely because of the current Covid-19 crisis, there are new online event apps being developed on an almost weekly basis, which have already and will continue to play a big role within event management.

Out of the office…?

I spend a massive amount of time and money following Leeds United home and away across the country. Some might say too much time and money……….
