Name: Jane Turner
Job title: Events and Marketing Assistant
Tell us about your journey to the 3M BIC
I am currently studying a BA Hons in Event Management at The University of Huddersfield. I chose the University of Huddersfield to study because I went to Sheffield City Campus College to study Hospitality and Events. I went to some tours of other universities and a lady I spoke to told me if you don’t want to move out but want to study events then ‘find somewhere far enough that you feel away from home, but comfortable enough and not too far that you feel unsure’. This was when I stumbled across Huddersfield. I did some research into the university and the town itself. I loved the course as it gave me options for certain modules, I could drop ones I wasn’t interested in and keep those I wanted to study in greater depth.
Describe a typical day at work:
No day is ever the same. I can be sat down on reception greeting tenants and helping visitors, to setting up meeting rooms for events and then going out to film managing directors of large businesses for videos to showcase at events that we host. Everyday is a variety which makes my job so interesting and is one of the main reasons I love what I do – I love meeting new people and helping them in any way that I can.
What are your first impressions of the 3M BIC?
My first impressions of the 3M BIC are that all the staff are nice and friendly and made me feel as though I was one of the team from the get-go. Nothing was too much trouble if I stumbled across a problem within learning the ropes. The building is interesting, I’ve never really been in a technology and innovation environment and it’s intriguing to see how all the machinery works and what’s available along Innovation Avenue.
What keeps you motivated at work?
The main thing that keeps me motivated at work is the fantastic team that I work with in the office, helping me where it’s needed and being congratulated and recognised for my hard work and dedication to my work.
The most exciting thing about your job?
The most exciting thing about my job is working with many different people when launching events, some of which are VIPs! I like how I’m constantly pushed to my limits to try new things and building my confidence when working with the events team to create fantastic events for the 3M BIC.
The most challenging?
The most challenging thing about my job is that there is never enough time in the day to get all the jobs done that need to be done!
Where do you see yourself in 5 years’ time?
I would like to be fully trained and have hands-on experience to hopefully become an events and marketing officer within a company. I love planning and organising events and watching all the hard work put into them taking place. It gives such a feeling of triumph when they go to plan.
Time of the day you most creative or inspired?
I feel most creative and inspired in a morning, I like to get straight into work and dive straight into what the day may hold for me.
Best piece of advice you’ve been given?
Work hard, play hard – live everyday to the max as you never know what tomorrow will bring.
Out of the office…?
I love to bake and try new recipes out, as well as walking and exploring new places. I also enjoy camping and going to the seaside – my favourite place is Whitby – as well as going fishing with my boyfriend and attending music festivals!
