Tell us about your journey to the 3M BIC
I am from Cyprus and decided to come abroad to study. I chose Huddersfield because the University of Huddersfield has high rankings on education and I feel more safe in a small town. As a student at the University of Huddersfield, I decided to pause a year to take a placement and gain some experience in the business industry as it will benefit my future career. I came across the opportunity at the 3M Buckley Innovation Centre where I can apply my skills, improve my knowledge and develop through my events assistant position.
Describe a typical day at work:
Everyday can vary. The first thing doing in the morning is to check my calendar to see the bookings of the day and start preparing any refreshments or set the meeting rooms if needed. When I return back to the office, I reply to emails and start solving issues regarding the events that 3M BIC runs at that time and after the client has checked out, I am checking the meeting rooms to see if everything is okay.
What are your first impressions of the 3M BIC?
The first impression of the 3M BIC is that all the members are very kind and friendly. On my very first day they welcomed me and made sure that everything is alright. This is what I like here in 3M BIC, the environment is so positive and friendly that I enjoy my work here.
What keeps you motivated at work?
3M BIC gives me the opportunity to apply my skills and develop through my mistakes. I can say that 3M BIC motivates me to be a better person to work and not be afraid of the language barrier or any mistake that might happen.
The most exciting thing about your job?
The most exciting thing about my work is communicating with and getting to know different companies, talking about their products, their aims and how their companies are growing.
I also have the opportunity to be involved in a variety of events as well as creating some of them.
The most challenging?
The most challenging part is that every day is not the same and I have lots to do in a certain amount of time. The 3M BIC hosts variety of events and as a part of events team it is my responsibility to make sure that everything will run smoothly and everyone is satisfied.
Where do you see yourself in 5 years’ time?
After my placement, I will return to university to finish my undergraduate degree, then I am planning to do a postgraduate degree. In 5 years, I hope I will be working somewhere where I can apply and practise my knowledge and gain more experience!
Time of the day you most creative or inspired?
The time that I find myself more creative and inspired is in the morning. I am more relaxed and focused while I’m drinking a cup of coffee and can think and create more easily.
Best piece of advice you’ve been given?
‘It takes time to do something well..’ and ‘To succeed you need to fail…’
Out of the office…?
Outside of the office you might find me either at the gym or walking around the town and shopping. I enjoy going on mini trips with my friends and spending time together.
