We’re excited to announce that we’ve been awarded the Business Recycling Award at the Kirklees Recycling Heroes Awards 2024.
Over the last few years, we have been implementing innovative initiatives to improve sustainability, encourage recycling and minimise waste, led by our environmental steering group and business liaison officer, Georgina Kipling.
The steering group, comprising employees and tenant businesses, meets regularly to drive forward our environmental strategy and share best practices.
This award reflects not only the hard work and dedication of Georgina and the team but also the collaborative efforts of the businesses within the Centre.
The ceremony took place at Dewsbury Town Hall on 20 November.
A green commitment
We have introduced a wide range of measures over the years:
- Recycling bins are readily available in communal kitchens, meeting rooms and event spaces.
- Single-use plastics have been eliminated from procurement processes, with a focus on sourcing locally and sustainably.
- Our food waste is converted into bioenergy, while unused furniture is donated to local charities, preventing unnecessary landfill contributions.
- Captured rainwater is used for toilet flushing and watering plants, significantly reducing water wastage.
Our outdoor wellbeing area offers a relaxing space for our tenant businesses and visitors with a mini allotment, where we encourage healthy living while reducing food waste by sharing fresh produce with staff, tenants and visitors.
Future sustainability goals
Looking ahead, we are planning further innovations to make our facilities even more sustainable and energy efficient. These include the adoption of advanced technologies and systems to minimise the building’s environmental footprint.
3M BIC CEO, Sue Cooke, said: “Winning this award is testament to our shared commitment to sustainability, as well as the exceptional efforts of Georgina and the entire team over recent years. At the 3M BIC, we are committed to leading by example and continually look for ways to improve our environmental practices. We’re inspired to continue striving towards our ambitious sustainability goals and drive meaningful change.”
