Two new members have joined the technology team at the 3M BIC over the last few months. Stephen Knowles joins as Technical Assistant and Georgina Kipling as Technical Assessor.
Prior to joining the 3M BIC, Stephen was a Design Technology, Computing and ICT teacher for nearly 30 years, working his way up to Head of Department of Computing and ICT. He was also a Duke of Edinburgh Award Co-ordinator. Before his teaching degree, he completed an apprenticeship in engineering.
His role as Technical Assistant at the 3M BIC involves supporting and assisting the work of the 3M BIC and enabling the technology team to do their work more effectively.
Commenting on his new role, Stephen said: “I have a desire to make a difference to the team and bring with me an eclectic knowledge and awareness of many different aspects of technology, as well as an enthusiasm for learning new things.
“I have been past the 3M BIC on many occasions, had a little glimpse inside, and thought it would be a place I would like to get involved in and be a part of. I find the whole place endlessly fascinating.”
Georgina’s background is in research and development within industry, mainly across the manufacturing sector, having worked for The CP Group and British Ceramic Tile Ltd. Her main roles involved the development of new products, processes and procedures as well as new technologies, equipment and advancing manufacturing methods.
In her new role as Technical Assessor, she will develop and provide support to businesses considering adopting and/or exploiting technology solutions and innovations for the manufacturing sectors and other industries. She hopes to use her knowledge and experience gained within the manufacturing sector to assess the needs and requirements of clients and businesses, enable engagement and provide a link for new innovation. Working closely with colleagues to utilise 3M BIC’s wide range of technologies and expertise she plans to expand this wealth of knowledge and technical advancement to local businesses and industries.
She said: “The 3M BIC is a very welcoming and friendly place and I’m looking forward to interacting with local businesses and industry, as well as learning more about the workings of the 3M BIC network. I hope to improve my skills set and expand my knowledge of new technologies, but also build good productive working relationships across all the teams at the 3M BIC, BEC and the University.”
