We have just become a new sponsor for HudRail, a group of Electrical and Mechanical Engineering students working together to push the boundaries of modern railway engineering.
HudRail has been representing the University of Huddersfield since 2013 in the Railway Challenge, a competition that was established by the Institute of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE) to encourage young engineers to pursue a career in the rail industry. The challenge is designed to promote excellence in rail engineering and address an industry skills shortage. University teams taking part in the challenge are tasked with creating a miniature railway locomotive; overseeing the design, manufacture, operation and commercial introduction of the product.
The team of engineering students, at both Master’s and Bachelor’s level, is part of the Institute of Railway Research Centre led by Simon Iwnicki at the University.
The 2016 competition is taking place on 2 and 3 July at Stapleford Miniature Railway in Leicestershire. In its first ever race in 2013, the HudRail team walked away with 1st place!
