We recently installed solar panels on the 3M BIC roof, harnessing renewable energy to reduce our carbon footprint and support a more sustainable future.
The installation forms part of the University of Huddersfield’s wider sustainability initiative, which also includes installing solar panels on the Barbara Hepworth Building – home to its School of Arts & Humanities.
The solar panels will allow us to generate clean, renewable energy on-site, reducing our carbon footprint and lowering energy costs.
We take sustainability seriously and over the years have introduced a wide range of measures:
- Recycling bins are readily available in all communal kitchens, meeting rooms and event spaces, making it easy for everyone to contribute to reducing waste.
- We have eliminated single-use plastics from our procurement processes and placed a strong emphasis on sourcing products locally and sustainably.
- Our food waste is converted into bioenergy, while any unused furniture is donated to local charities – helping prevent unnecessary contributions to landfill and supporting the community.
- To reduce water wastage, we capture rainwater and use it for toilet flushing and watering plants, ensuring a more sustainable approach to resource management.
- Our outdoor wellbeing area provides a relaxing space for tenants and visitors, featuring a mini allotment that promotes healthy living. By sharing fresh produce with staff, tenants, and guests we encourage sustainability and help reduce food waste.
We were awarded the Business Recycling Award at the Kirklees Recycling Heroes Awards in 2024, highlighting the impact of our efforts to create a greener, more sustainable environment for our tenants, members and wider community.
We’re excited to see how these initiatives will continue to reduce our environmental impact and help us operate more sustainably every day.
