The 3M BIC’s Innovation Week (4-8 November) kicked off yesterday with its opening event designed to inspire entrepreneurial students to adopt innovation.

Hosted by strategic design consultancy, The Engine Room, the event provided emerging entrepreneurs from The Duke of York Young Entrepreneur Centre (DOYYEC) with an insight into innovation to inspire them to adopt inventive methods in order to create successful business propositions. The engaging and interactive session looked at how design thinking methods can aid entrepreneurial success, innovation and effective business planning, and was supported by Santander Universities.

Established for 18 years, Yorkshire-based The Engine Room works with clients across the globe to help them differentiate and achieve positive business impact by design. Via a combination of business thinking and design thinking, it works with ambitious businesses that require specialist help, an objective viewpoint and a catalyst to inject a new level of ‘stand-out’.

Design students from the University of Huddersfield have also been taking part in a design challenge as part of Innovation Week. Categories include: most innovative product design; design with best application to technology; design with most commercial potential; design with best visual presentation and best overall design.

Judges of the design challenge include 3M, Siemens, Mamas and Papas and Elmwood and 3M BIC. Winners of each category will be revealed on 5 November and will win a studio visit from their category sponsor. The overall winner will be supported by the 3M BIC’s design and visualisation team to produce a prototype of their design using the centre’s advanced 3-D printing technologies. The shortlisted entries are on display to the public in the 3M BIC’s Atrium throughout Innovation Week.

Innovation Week at the 3M BIC aims to encourage businesses to embrace innovation, whether it’s creating a new or improving an existing product, developing ways to improve productivity and quality or conceiving a disruptive business model. Key speakers across the week’s events include 3M, Siemens, Leeds City Region Enterprise Partnership, Ionix AT, RTC North and PAPI.
