Introducing our first 3M BIC Fellow, Shan Lou. Shan is a Senior Research Fellow at the University of Huddersfield in the Engineering Department.
Shan is part of the first ever cohort of the newly launched 3M BIC Fellowship. His research project will focus on holistic geometrical verification of additive manufacture (AM) components (including surface texture, dimensional accuracy as well as internal defects), with the aim of linking AM process optimisation and AM product performance assessment.
Shan applied for the Fellowship as he felt that the 3M BIC’s expertise and additive manufacturing and metrology facilities would greatly benefit his research project and would help him to disseminate his research work to the wider audience in the University and to industry.
Through the 3M BIC Fellowship, Shan will benefit from printing additive manufacturing samples, access to X-ray CT to enable internal geometry measurement, use of optical microscopes to enable surface topography measurement, as well as connect to relevant industrial partners.
Commenting on the Fellowship, Shan Lou, said: “Additive manufacturing (AM) is paving the way of shaping the paradigm of manufacturing technology. The 3M BIC Fellowship will complement my current research funding, by providing me with more resources to carry out the ongoing research work. Through the Fellowship, I hope to be able to find bespoke metrology solutions for the geometrical verification of additive manufacturing products, as well as connect with more industry partners.
“The Fellowship is ideal for those that can align their personal research interest with the strategical areas of the 3M BIC, and I would highly recommend it.”
Shan is planning to apply for the EPSRC Early Career Fellowship in 2022.
Entries are now open for the next 3M BIC Fellowship cohort
The 3M BIC Fellowship is only open to academic research staff from the University of Huddersfield.
Entries for the next cohort of the 3M BIC Fellowship opened on 23rd April 2021 and will close on 25 June 2021. Applications should be forwarded though your Dean’s offices to Michael Wilson, Chief Technology Officer at the 3M BIC on fellowship@3mbic.com.
An adjudication process will take place throughout July 2021 with successful Fellows being informed of the outcome by August 2021.
The adjudication panel will assess how closely the application meets the aims of the award, the feasibility of what is proposed and links/potential links to business and industrial applications, as well as its impact on the wider regional economy.
