explore innovation

The 3M BIC Fellowship, designed to support innovative research within the University of Huddersfield, is now open for new applications for research staff at the University.

The 3M BIC Fellowship has been created to allow early-stage academics at the University of Huddersfield to advance their explorative work with cutting-edge technologies at the 3M BIC, as well as access support and mentoring, networking opportunities and meeting spaces within the Centre.

The initiative will help promote relevant research in Huddersfield that will be of significance to regional industries and will encourage grant applications that include the 3M BIC as a key partner and collaborator in follow-up studies. It will also provide long-term commitment to submit joint research grant bids between the University of Huddersfield and the 3M BIC.

The 3M BIC Fellowship is only open to academic research staff from the University of Huddersfield and research projects that can be linked to the 3M BIC’s capabilities and expertise, which include:

  • Zeiss Imaging Suite with its range of microscopy techniques,
  • Scanning and metrology using optical and X-ray technologies (XCT),
  • Polymer and direct metal additive manufacture, including design for AM (additive manufacture),
  • Non-destructive testing and part examination
  • Other advanced computing applications including CAD, and design optimisation tooling using algorithmic analysis.

Successful applicants will be able to access the technology and expertise for up to two years for research purposes.  Consumable materials and external training costs can be included with a 50% contribution to these costs from their University School.

Entries for the next cohort of the 3M BIC Fellowship can be submitted now and will close on Monday 31 July 2023.  Applications should be forwarded though your Dean’s office to Janine Downs, Technology Manager at the 3M BIC on janine.downs@3mbic.com.

An adjudication process will take place throughout August 2023 with successful Fellows being informed of the outcome by September 2023, with a view to starting their fellowship the following month.

The adjudication panel will assess how closely the application meets the aims of the award, the feasibility of what is proposed and links/potential links to business and industrial applications, as well as its impact on the wider regional economy.

Please note that the 3M BIC Fellowship is only available to research staff at the University of Huddersfield and not under or post-grads.
